Parade Instructions

At the practice on Saturday, clear and exact instructions were given to all participants at the practice concerning the following questions:

Where do we drop off our boys?
Drive up 400 North to 900 East.  There will be a sign at that point indicating that corner is the DROP OFF location.  The boys will be instructed to walk directly south along 900 East to our staging area which is located between 300 North and Center Street. There, they will find  their Stake and Ward leaders.  We ask that the boys arrive no later than 8:00 a.m.

Where is the staging area for the parade?
Please find a map of the staging area here. As indicated, the staging area is located along 900 East between Center Street and 300 North.  Stake banners will be visible to each boy.  Find your Stake and Ward banner and gather there.  We ask that the boys arrive no later than 8:00 a.m.

What should each boy wear?
Wear your uniform and bring your decorated staff.  It might be well to have a bottle of water. The boys should wear shorts and a t-shirt under their uniform and any shoes that are comfortable.

Where do we pick our boys up after the parade?
All drivers of vehicles are to drive north on 400 North after dropping off their boys and make their way to the Costco parking lot where they can park during the parade.  Boys are to find their rides at that location following the parade.

What should the boys do with the uniforms and staffs following the parade?
The boys do NOT need to return either the staffs or uniforms.  They are theirs to do with as they please.

Will the boys be able to hear the music?
Our practice last Saturday helped us to know how to address this issue.  The sound truck will be located in the middle of the marchers with speakers pointed front and back.  It will be LOUD and those boys closest to the sound truck will be offered ear plugs if they desire them.

What else can we do to help make this a success

  • Please pray that it will be a memorable experience that will do exactly what President Chris Shepherd had envisioned when he said, This Army of Helaman March came about as a way to inspire youth, families, and our community to have faith and courage in choosing the right. It is the intent that each participant has a spiritual experience which will strengthen their life as well as the lives of their families and our community.”
  •  Please announce it to your congregations and talk it up with your youth at Mutual this week.  Discuss it in your quorums and classes.  Pray for its success
  • Be excited and enthusiastic concerning this wonderful event.
Photos from the practice on Saturday can be found at the "Photos of Practice" tab under the main title block at the top of the page.

Call to Action

Last Saturday evening, representatives from eight stakes picked up the costumes and staffs for the young men in their stakes who have chosen to march with the 2,060 warriors of Helaman in the Fiesta Day Parade.  It is now our hope that they are distributing those materials to their wards this week so that each young man can customize and decorate his staff and get ready for the practice.

Our one and only practice will be held on Saturday, July 20th.  Please begin dropping off your young men by 7:45 a.m.  Instruction and placement will begin about 8:30 so that we will be in place and ready to begin promptly at 9:00.

Items handed out last Saturday, in addition to the warrior costumes and staffs were:
  • A map of the staging area (click here).
  • A copy of the lyrics to the two songs that the boys are to learn. (see May 17 post below)
  • A copy of the chant that the boys will repeat (see "Video of Shout" under HELPFUL LINKS along the right side of this blog).
  • Additional posters for any chapels that need them (Please let us know if you do not see a poster in your building and would be willing to put one up).
  • Written instructions relating to the practice which is scheduled for July 20th (click here).

Some of the stakes have enlisted over 200 of their young men to march at this point.  We are receiving calls daily from anxious parents indicating that they want their sons to participate and are wondering what they need to do to get the uniforms and staffs.  If your stake is not participating and you have a young man aged 11-24 who would like to participate, please contact Ray Morley at (801) 836-9711 or raygmorley@yahoo.com.

This is a great opportunity to provide our young men an experience that can change their lives for good.  Please exert yourselves and help us move this activity forward in such a way that it will prove to be a blessing in the lives of our youth.

Sincerely,

Mike Morley, Chairman

March Music

As we make our way down the parade route, we will march to a few different hymns and songs.  We are making arrangements for a sound system to accompany the marchers so that all can hear the music and join in singing.  As leaders, please work with your young men to help them become familiar with the words and music for the following:

Fireside Planning

Army of Helaman
Fireside for Stake or Ward

The success of the the Army of Helaman March on July 24, 2013 will best be measured in the individual lives of the young men who participate; specifically in the extent to which their lives afterward reflect the attributes of the Helaman's stripling warriors.  Those attributes include:

  • Had faithful parents who taught them well (Alma 23:5-18, Alma 27:25-30)
  • Chose to be led by prophet (Alma 53:19)
  • Helped parents keep covenants (Alma 53:13-16)
  • Covenanted to fight for liberty (Alma 53:17)
  • Willing to give their lives in service (Alma 53:17)
  • Exceedingly valiant for courage (Alma 53:20)
  • Exceedingly valiant for strength and activity (Alma 53:20)
  • True at all times in whatsoever things they were entrusted (Alma 53:20)
  • Supported by parents
  • Striplings - young (Alma 53:20, Alma 56:46)
  • Through their example, provided encouragment and inspiration to adults (Alma 57:25)
  • Physically strong (Alma 56:39-43, 56)
  • Great courage (Alma 56:45)
  • Did not fear death, but thought more on the liberty of their fathers (Alma 56:47)
  • Taught by their mothers (Alma 56:47-48, Alma 57:21)
  • Turned the tide of the battle against evil (Alma 56:54)
  • Obedient (Alma 57:21)
  • Performed every word and command with exactness (Alma 57:21)
  • Their minds were firm and they trusted in God continually (Alma 57:27)
  • Wounded in battle, but none fell (Alma 56:55-56, Alma 57:25-26)
  • THEY DID NOT DOUBT (Alma 56:48)

Every stake and ward has varying concerns and needs with respect to their young men.  In coming days, we will provide links to General Confernence talks and Ensign or New Era articles that will help stakes and wards teach these important principals to their young men and leaders who will be participating.

Introduction

“Army of Helaman”
Fiesta Days Parade
July 24, 2013

This Army of Helaman March came about as a way to inspire youth, families, and our community to have faith and courage in choosing the right.  It is the intent that each participant has a spiritual experience which will strengthen their life as well as the lives of their families and our community.

This year, as we learn about Church History and the courageous events of our early brothers and sisters, we will be inspired, uplifted, and motivated by their lives of sacrifice and dedication.  These same virtues are found in the story of Helaman and his 2000 Stripling Warriors.  The historic announcement by Pres. Monson in the October 2012 General Conference has energized our youth to serve as the Army of Helaman in all the world.  We desire to re-enact in some small way what it would be like to participate with 2060 young Stripling Warriors.  Imagine how the spirit will touch the hearts of those in attendance as they see 2060 young boys and men march past. It will be an overwhelming sight and the spirit will burn deep in those who want to feel it. It will be incredible!

This is intended to be more than just a parade experience. As the host stake of the parade entry, the Spanish Fork Utah West Stake will invite each ward in our stake to make special efforts in using this event as a wonderful missionary and activation opportunity. We will encourage each of our wards to have all the active members of their quorums write their testimony of the Book of Mormon on the inside of the book. We will then invite them to take a book to each inactive and non-member young man of their same age group. We will encourage them to sit with those young men and relate to them the story of Helaman and his 2000 young warriors. It will be inspiring when these young boys teach each other from the Book of Mormon. This ties very well into the new youth curriculum and teaches them to teach as the Savior taught.  When they have finished telling and teaching this story, we will invite all young men to join with us as we bring to life this event in the Book of Mormon. We want to invite each inactive and non-member young man to join with us in the march and be part of this incredible opportunity.

We encourage every participating stake and ward to consider the same approach or any other approach that they feel will bless the members of their stake. We believe that this will inspire all young men who might be questioning their desire to serve a mission. We believe that there will be young men who are inactive who will then become active. We believe their families will be impacted and that there will be entire families who will return because of this opportunity. Given the efforts of a quorum, a young man could even decide to join the Church after participating in this experience.

This can be whatever the stake and wards decide they want it to be. We believe this experience could bring such a profound spirit to our parade that it could literally affect hundreds and even thousands of people for good. It could be the vehicle that brings the spirit of the Lord back into a home where it may have been lacking. We simply believe this will change lives!!

We would encourage each participating stake to hold a fireside a week or two prior to the parade and invite every participant and their families to come enjoy the spirit of this marvelous event as we make final spiritual preparations for the parade.

This is a huge undertaking. We will need the cooperation of so many but we feel the cause is worth the effort. Please join us as we bring Helaman and his 2000 Stripling Warriors to life!
